NFL Mobile no longer free

Recently I tried to access the once free NFL application offered by Verizon only to find that they have now applied monthly charges to the application. There are very few characteristics that separate companies from another. Forgive me for speaking freely, but I find it disturbing that applications, that used to be free, are no longer free. Business will always remain business, but seems like no company wants to cater to their customers. Everything carries a price tag now a days and the old method of meeting customer expectations and exceeding them are extinct like the businesses that once operated in that realm. I understand this may be a simple $3/month application but soon it will happen to all "free" applications. It is sort of depressing to find once free apps are now coming with a price tag. Applications that cost $3/month add up and soon doesnt make sense to pay for. Well enough about this common form of inflation. I will just watch cable and wait to see if another cellular service offers "true" deals.

actually, it still is free (for those that have a 4G phone) for this season.  all other users, it was only offered as free trial for the month of September.

if you have a 4G phone like me (and I got the same notification), clear the cache for the app then try running it again.  worked for me.

hope this helps.

You are right, it is free; however, the viewing of live football games is not. This was not an issue a year ago when i first got my Droid X (3g). The NFL application was not a trial application but instead it was advertised as an application that all competitors wish they could offer the customers and the fact that Verizon was giving it for free was just adding salt to the wound. Its just frustrating when something is all of a sudden taken away and being offered at yet ANOTHER monthly charge. I hope this post isnt taken in offense, just basically a loyal customer who feels that this isnt the end of Verizons efforts to charge for everything now. The sad thing is, I know I am not alone, there are plenty of posts regarding this very same topic. But I guess a solution is to no longer use "Verizon" applications. I will just us the DirectTV Sunday Ticket on my Droid X and Xoom. There is always a work around but this is just a negative mark against Verizons choice in charging its customers for a once FREE application.

Actually a year ago it was stated it was free for the season. It was all over the NFL page on VZW. VZW paid BIG BUCKS ($750 Million) to the NFL to get the service from Sprint. They have to recoup it somehow.

while it would be nice if they could've kept it free forever, i knew last season that it was only for the the "entire 2010-2011 season." i was pleasantly surprised to see that they are giving it to LTE users (likely as an incintive to purchase an LTE device). i understand how you feel, but it would have to be the NFL that decided they wouldn't charge verizon nearly a billion dollars for the exclusive rights. that's just too much $ for verizon to eat.

Part of the reason some of these products are available on the devices is to gain a user dependency (first hit is free) then start charging for your fix.

This is just another reason why we should be able to remove applications from the devices...

When we cannot play them for some reason (like the application author has renegotiated with verizon or its other entities and it can no longer be used).

Exactly right, first hit is free and we should be able to get rid of the applications that are useless WITHOUT having to root our phones. It should not take HACKING a pieces of equipment to create something a customer can customize completely. But I sound like an angry person with all the complaing I am doing. I am actually pleased with the Androids, but YOU NEVER GET BETWEEN A MAN AND FOOTBALL! That even goes for the corporations!

Great post fmotta

All of the application, including watching the games live is still free if you have a 4G phone.  Not sure where some of you are getting that there is a charge for 4G.  I have the Samsung Charge and had the same issue where it was asking me to update and subscribe.  I called Verizon and they told me it was free for ALL 4G phones this season and that includes the video too.  We have two 4G phones on our plan and both are watchng the games live and not getting charged.  If you are getting charged call CS and they will take the charge off.

All this being said, it is a shame it is still not free for all VZW phones, and my guess is this will be the last year anyone, even 4G phones get it free.  Actually if they were smart they could probably make it free for all smartphones.  With the new data plans, using the app will probably triple your 2GB/month allowance and they would make more on the data overages than they would lose by not charging for the app.
