messaging does not access my contacts

when I use the messsaging app on my DROID and start to type a name that is in my contacts, the messaging app does not lookup the name in my contacts and populate the app with the phone number.

is this a shortcoming of the app itself or do I need to configure something.

 Are you talking about texting and not getting your contacts to appear?

 It happened to me because I didn't have the last name in the contact, just the first. Also, if you have the phone number under other or home, instead of a mobile number, it will not come up.

looks like the phone contacts were listed as "unknown" and when I changed this, the messaging application started to look them up.
