It is entirely possible the manual is outdated. I don't recall if the Droid Maxx 2 has Marshmallow or Lollipop on it. I just know that my Moto X changed in how the Ambient Display/Moto Display worked after I got it because Motorola shifted the function from one application to the other. I also wonder if notifications stop flashing because of a battery settings like Doze to reduce the amount of battery used for the notification flashing. I guess I don't notice much if the phone stops flashing a notification after a while. I actually sometimes find it flashes too much. If I have to get to see if I have a notification, I wave my hand across the face of the phone activating the proximity sensor and the screen will light up letting me know if there is something waiting.

First off, Ann, your use and needs have no bearing on mine, so if you think your phone flashes too much, it's irrelevant. Mine doesn't flash at all, not Active Display or Ambient. My battery setting is not set to Doze; I get excellent battery life with all options set to full.
As for the Moto X, my current (reverted to) Moto X with Lollipop 5.1 still has Active Display as an option and it works the way it's supposed to. I don't know why yours changed. No "shifting" occurred here: It also has an Ambient Display option, but I don't want that, so I leave it at Moto Active Display.
And to get you up to speed, the Maxx 2 has Lollipop 5.1.1.
Again, I don't like arguing this point.
I don't want to continue these discussion because it's getting me nowhere, but I do want to document the entire thread and send a snail mail complaint to Verizon Customer Service. Will you be kind enough to provide me with a mailing address? Thank you.

Also, the proximity sensor on this Maxx 2 does not work: it doesn't light the screen.

Maybe the proximity sensor is the problem not the active display. Did you test that?
This is primarily a peer to peer customer forum and not a direct link to Customer Service. As a customer I can only provide suggestions based on my experiences with the various devices I have used on the Verizon Wireless network including three different recent Motorola phones.
Take the phone back if you prefer. It doesn't matter to me.

The mailing address is where it has always been. Under the Contact Us link at the top of every Verizon Wireless web page
