Adding a new notification sound

I have a Galaxy A01 phone, and I'd like to add a new notification sound that I downloaded to the list.  Alas, I can't paste it into the right folder.  I know that I can always hook my phone up to my Linux computer and use root access to do it, but I'd like to know how it can be done using only the phone itself.  Is there a way?

Is there not user accessible folders called "ringtones", "notifications, and" alarms" in the internal memory space? You don't need root access to modify those folders.

Yes, but even when I have the file I want copied, I can't paste it into that folder because paste is grayed out.  If it weren't, I wouldn't need to ask here, would I?

Instead of paste try move to ger it in that folder.  Mary

There doesn't seem to be a folder anywhere, either in my Main Storage or on my SD Card that has the appropriate files.  If anybody knows where it is, or how to find it, please let me know.

I found the folder: /Android/media/com.google.android.gm, and every file is in its own folder.  Alas, creating a new folder and putting the sound file into it doesn't make it available, even after a reboot.  Suggestions?

That looks like a system folder and not in the user accessible area. I don't have a Samsung phone to know how they are organizing the file system but I can show what the folder path would on a stock Pixel. 

This image is from a file explorer app that has an option to look for duplicate files. It shows the folders where the duplicate files are stored. As I have duplicate ringtones stored in different folders, it shows those locations.

The location of the ringtone folder has basically been the same since Android 2.0 including across multiple manufacturers of Android phones. If you can't find it, you aren't looking in the right place.

I can't see your folder system. I don't have a Samsung phone currently, but I have used one in the past. Those ringtones I showed in the image have been transferred from a HTC DROID Eris, HTC Aria, HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One M7, Motorola DROID Turbo, Moto X 2013, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Moto X 2014, Pixel 1, and finally a Pixel 3a.
