Can't turn off alarm before the set time

I woke up earlier than alarm was set for.

Tried to cancel alarm....didn't work....alarm still went off

Just to confirm, when you "tried to cancel alarm", you opened the Alarm tab in the Clock app and tapped the X in the upper right-hand corner in the box showing the set alarm?
