For the second time in less than a week since the software update I woke up to find my battery completely dead even though it was on the charger. Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?
I would make sure all your 3rd party apps are up to date... go in to play store, then hit the 3 dots at bottom right, choose my apps, and see if any need updated.

Let's get to the bottom of this! That definitely should not be happening. Are you using the charger that came with the device? Is the charger loose in the port at all?

My phone is one again randomly going through phases where it won't charge & says the charger (that came with the phone) isn't recognized. Can you please let me know what might have triggered my phone to begin acting like this again so I can try to resolve the problem.

Let's ensure your phone is charging as it should be. Is your software up to date? Have you tried a different charger? If so, does it give you the same result?
