I sync'd up last night with my GMail account and sync'd with my contacts. All of the contacts were imported to the phone, but they were removed completely from my GMail account. I've seen intances that I would consider to be a "similar" problem where people reported that it was deleting emails from the pop3 server for pop3 emails.
I have updated my device to the latest OS. Yes I can re-add the contacts to GMail one by one, but that's a time consuming process that I shouldn't have to do. I contacted Verizon support by phone and they suggested I try a hard restart and to resync my contacts that it should put them back on my gmail account. I'm seeking second opinions before I do that in case it causes additional problems.
I had a similar thing happen with my droid x.
When I first got my phone, it was a day before I got the people at Verizon to import my contacts from my old phone. For that first day, even though my phone was tied to my existing gmail account, all my contacts where fine.
The next day when I went in to Verizon, they imported my contacts and then set up the Autosync and backup.
When I got home I noticed that all my gmail contacts had been replaced with the contacts from my phone. All the old gmail contacts from the last few years are gone! The annoying part is when I send email, I don't get autocomplete of email addresses anymore....
I'm not sure if it is something they did in the store, or user error- but it appears it happened at the store.
I did some searching on google ("droid gmail contacts erased") and this issue is all over the internet! Google had better figure something out fast!
When my phone did this it deleted half of my contacts both on Google and off my phone. I've completely lost some of my numbers and I had to try to locate them from somewhere else.
