Do I have to go to a store to activate my device?

I switched phones with my son.  In order to activate his Samsung phone on Mt phone number, I needed a new SIM card.  Verizon sent one to me now I want to get my phone activated asap.  Do I gave to go to a store or can this be done on my own?
