Eris and Google Voice

Okay, I've found the Verizon version of Visual Voicemail to be rather wonky and unreliable. My biggiest  issues with it (I use the Verizon Visual Voicemail app) are false notifications and having the message playing only through the speaker, not the earpiece or Bluetooth headset and no way to change this. Not to mention the monthly fee for this service when it was free with AT&T and the iPhone (about the only thing that worked right there, I'll admit). I'd rather just cancel the Visual Voicemail service and have Back-up Assistant instead.

So I'm interested in Google Voice. I notice that you can use your existing phone number and that there's an Android Google Voice ap for the phone. Is anyone using this service? My ideal scenario would be to have the voice messages come in as text messages. Reading or hearing them on the computer would be cool, but not necessary.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

To get Google Voice you have to go to the google site https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/    and request an invite to Google Voice.  When they get around to giving you one which sometimes takes a month or longer then you can try it out.  It is supposed to be pretty cool.  It is also supposed to allow you to read text messages of your voicemails.  Among other features.  You can join me and whoever else here in waiting for an invite or begging anyone else here who happens to have some to give you one.  I really want this service but currently I am playing the waiting game cause I don't want to buy an invite off ebay.

Anyway, the concept is great -- But I don't use it as much as I should though to be honest, being able to look at voicemails/texts and even respond to them through desktop is incredible.

And not only that but I can give the GV Number out to people who I deem "creeper status."

Harrumphh. Oh, well, I signed up anyway. Is there any other Visual Voicemail options for Droids besides the 3 rather lame offerings in the Android Market?

Doggone-it, as if to antagonize me, the Visual Voicemail notification on my Eris has gone off 3 times in the last hour with no voicemails to be heard. What on Earth is going on??

Do you have an invite to spare?  Or do those come a litle at a time whenever Google is giving them out?
