Google buying Motorola Mobility

I thought this was interesting. Google is buying Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. This could make Motorola a lot more attractive to me.

Where did you see this?

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Google only had to pay a little over 12 billion dollars for Motorola?

That sounds really cheap.

Why didn't Apple, Inc buy Motorola?  12 billion dollars is just pocket change for Apple.  They could have bought

Motorola and liquidated the company.  Or turn all Motorola production lines into iPhone/iPad production lines.

Now that Google owns Motorola, will they change the name to Moo-Goo?(as in Moo-Goo-Gai-Pan?) :smileyvery-happy:

Seriously though.... this is probably going to be a big boost to the Android world.(understatement of the week)

My only concern is that future Motorola Android devices will always get the new updates faster than other

Androi devices from Samsung, HTC, etc.....

I'm guessing that there is more to Motorola than just Motorola Mobility. On January 4, 2011, Motorola separated into 2 divisions, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. This is just for 1 of the divisions.

From Wall Street Journal...

seems like they already do (on verizon anyhow). moto droid and the X had froyo before the htc inc or fascinate. and i believe the X or the X2 was the first verizon android to get gingerbread? i could be wrong, but i've always felt that motorola got the updates first on verizon's network.

Good point. :smileyhappy:   I wonder if Google and Motorola have a special secret deals as far as Android is concerned? :smileyhappy:

Can Google now come up with enough cash & financing to buy Vodaphone's 45% shares in Verizon Wireless?

(thus having control of the OS, the phone, and the wireless carrier at the same time)

Sorry Ann,,,I usually go straight to the Thunderbolt forum, hence my post there:smileywink:

My hope is Google will take the strengths of Motorola devices (solid hardware, battery life) and add a less intrusive interface (closer to vanilla android) and hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit. Imagine a device where the user, because of an unlocked bootloader, can really customize the experience they have with their device.:smileyvery-happy:

I'm almost to the point where I'm going to plunge into the custom ROM world, not because of some new whiz-bang feature...just to get a phone I don't have to baby-sit the data connection on. Before everyone jumps on suggesting this or that, I've done everything VZW suggests for this problem including the dreaded Factory Reset. I'm not about to go the CLNR route because I'm not trading my pampered tbolt for the pig-in-a-poke that path takes.

I have over 35years in the electronics field, both Analog and Digital (I started working in the service in 1970 on room sized, wire wrapped computers), so I would love the chance to analytically approach a solution to my data drops but I'm not allowed to reflash an older, and to me more usable, firmware. I'd also like the option to remove apps I never will use which may exacerbate my problem. Again locked bootloader = live with it, CLNR or void warranty :smileymad:

I'm also pretty sure one of Google's main reasons for this purchase was to acquire Motorola's patents to help them in dealing with Apple's perpetual law suits. They lost out on the Nortel deal, but this will give them a lot more patents than that would have.

I don't think it's going to make as big of a change as most of you are predicting. They have went out of their way already this morning to say that Google and Motorola would continue to operate as totally independent companies. HTC and Samsung have come out with statements as well, it seems like they were in the loop on things and supportive of the move since it was done primarily for patent reasons. I think Google is too smart of a company to alienate other manufacturers of their devices.
