I've had this Droid Eris for about 4 months. It was a replacement for my Motorola Droid (which I miss horribly, too bad it wouldn't be replaced by Verizon.) Recently (the past 2-3 weeks) the messaging application has frozen and shut down. It's not because there are too many messages. I barely text and I have 8gbs of free space. The touch screen has been doing the opposite of what I want. It has been opening random apps and calling people, etc. It mostly pans to the far left on my home screen and will not move. I have not downloaded any apps or any imported any outside media. The phone also won't turn off. I have to manually take the battery out. The screen also doen't go off. I have done a hard reset and that didn't do anything. I don't have an upgrade until 2012. Is there anything that can be done? I don't want this piece of junk anymore. Buying a phone outright seems to be the only option but I can't keep shelling out hundreds of dollars for these phones. don't have a replacement plan or repair plan.

Try to go to manage apps and delete some data/cache from apps that you use a lot it will help a lot
Inteneral memory and random access memory are two completely different things

I deleted the cache/data like you said. It helped a little. It's not as bogged down as before. The touch screen is still going crazy. I currently can't text or call anyone.

To the OP, scrolling to the far left is from what I have read is a known issue for the Eris.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Scrolling to the left and random screen selections means that your trackball has gone bad (very common on the Eris) and the only solution aside from taking the phone apart to replace it is to have the phone replaced.

My droid Eris has lost it too. It's like it is a ouiji board. Started last night. It is not overuse of the "trackball" as someone else suggested as I barely ever use the trackball. Its like a callaberation thing...although I tried to callaberate it again already.
Any suggestions?

It's not an overuse thing, it has something to do with the trackball being too close to the charger port and either the port gets loose, or it can get too hot and the trackball sensors go bad. I believe there are videos on YouTube on how to replace them but, obviously, this is done completely at your own risk. If you have the insurance, it should include an extended warranty, so you might want to look into that.

I had the Eris for almost 2 yrs and in that time frame went through 3 phones. In each one the trackball was malfunctioning and kept scrolling to the left. I was tired of calling verizon for a replacement and they offered me an early upgrade so I went with the Thunderbolt which is a faster, better version of the Eris which overall was a great phone other than the scrolling thing which sucked.... by the way the thunderbolt is amazing!!

I've gone through 3 HTC Eris phones myself and I've given up and just accepted the fact that it will always have issues and cannot be fixed! I've have all the same problems with the touch screen, while on a call the screen won't light up to put on speaker, delayed typing, internet opens then closes, well all applications do that intermittently, my screen will go to a blank white screen at times, etc. The list goes on and on! I can't wait for my upgrade!!!!! I hate this phone!!
