There is a lot of controversy over what helps and what hurts battery life when it comes to mobile phones so what I need to know is this... Is it safe to charge my HTC Droid Eris while it is powered on or should I always shut it off while it is connected to the charger?
Yes, it's completely safe to leave your phone on while charging.

I have had my Android phone for over a year now. I have charged it many times with it being on. It has not hurt my battery at all. Although I do find that if I leave it on while charging it, it charges slower. When I have it turned off, the phone charges more quickly.
Apparently.
I have charged mine every night with it powered on from Day 1. It's my only phone and with a girlfriend 2 blocks away with an 80-year mother, her son and daughter-in-law with 3 kids, and my own 72-years mother 3 hours away, my phone had better work at night with the charger plugged in!
