First try doing a System cache clear and the other would be the factory data reset. In some cases the system cache clear will work and at other times not. Even the FDR will not solve all issues in all cases. Your issue is a known 5.0 problem on this forum. We can only wait for an update but at this time their is no word of or any official release date for one. I would urge you to contact both Samsung and Verizon at the Corp management level.

I cleared the system cache and when I did so, the picture of the android character said "ERROR", proceeded o reboot and nothing changed in the slightest, I still have no service. This is absurd how the update would absolutely destroy my phone. What do I do from here? take out the SIM card and do a factory reset?

That would be the next step making sure you try to backup anything on the phone that you need first of course.
