Probably because knolowgy doesn't allow sending of email from foreign networks like Midco doesn't. I set my outgoing mail for my midco account to use my gmail credintials for outgoing mail for the midco net and GMAIL allows the SNMP relay with proper credentials.....
Outgoing
Username: Account@gmail.com
Password: YourPassword
SMTP.GMAIL.COM
SSL

and you should be good

I use my laptop using a UM175 to set up my outlook account.
After Verizon's surprise cancellation of it's SMTP I was forced to use Gmail to forward all my email ( you can read here) because knology did not allow you to use theirs. Upon reformatting my laptop, a couple of days ago, I forgot to save my outlook account information so, by accident, outlook setup my SMTP using Knology and it worked through Verizon's network.
I went to work and had 3 others set up theirs the same way and it worked.....
POP3.knology.net
SMTP.knology.net

ok I finally talked to someone at Knology that understood. here is the deal:
POP3.knology.net
SMTP.knology.net
pop3 is 110
smtp is 25
no certificates, be sure to check the sign in required
hope this helps others that have had the same problem
