Memory full of Google photos

I have a Galaxy S4 with memory issues.  Google photos uploads ALL of my photos to my phone using up so much memory that I cannot update some other more important apps.  Anyone know how to stop this?

Hello gailouise,

I love taking pictures on my phone, but I understand when too many files can cause concern. When you go to the Google Photos app, tap on the menu button in the top left corner and go to settings. On here, you can choose to turn off “Back up & sync.” You can also choose “Free up device storage” to remove photos from your device that are backed up to Google.

You should move your photos to a computer, and copy them to secondary media such as an SD card rather than keep them on your phone. Keeping your photos on a phone only is risky business. You will lose them someday.

If your Google Storage is out, Google provides unlimited photo storage if you're willing to let Google cut the quality of the cloud copy. See: Choose a storage size - Google Photos Help

If your photos exist on a computer separately, and you want to keep them in the Google Photos "Cloud" Storage, AND you have Unlimited Photo storage enabled in the Google account, deleting the photos via the Gallery App (Not the photos app!) will delete the photos locally from the device, and not from the Google Photos. But if you delete from the Google Photos app, both the phone's copy and the cloud copy will be sent to the shredder.
