Hi everyone, not sure if you read the new post by Google yesterday but you can now merge ALL duplicate contacts with just one click! ... http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/one-button-to-merge-all-duplicate.html

So heres my question to you smart people out there, has anyone deleted all contacts from their phone and then synced the contacts back up through gmail?

I have the Eris and have so many duplicate contacts now after they synced it at the store, its so freaking annoying!

when the moto droid went through the update, there were many complaints about people losing their entire contact list.  the suggestion was to sync with gmail and they would reappear:

- Contacts No Longer in Contacts List

  • Go to Contacts > Menu > Display Options.
  • Tap on your GMail account to drop down that list
  • Check everything in that list
  • Back out and they should be in there
  • Explanation - Sometimes after a SW update, the contacts groups will go back to default and "hide" some (or possibly all) of your contacts

now the above was for the moto droid. but it was possible to retrieve the information
