Messaging on a tablet?

We added a line for my daughter's tablet. I'm trying to set up messaging on it but when it get to the part where it is supposed to send you a verification code, I'm stuck. How can they text me a code to the very app I'm attempting to set up...before I can get texts on that app? Am I missing something?

The tablet can't send and receive text messages natively. You have to sync the Verizon Messages+ application to a phone and that phone's number.
