I went Droid because of keyboard, large high def screen, fast more advanced architecture processor, separate graphics processor, Android 2.0 (yeah I didn't want to wait), and of course the marketing didn't hurt though I really wanted this phone long before Verizon admitted it existed.

It comes down to this.  The Droid Does - if you want a phone that will do more faster then it is your man.  The DROID is currently the most advanced Android phone on the market and is likely to be until some time next year.  It is superior in hardware and software to any other Android device on the market and has very similar specs (arguably better but it all depends on how you weight your grading curve) to the other most advanced smart phone the iPhone 3Gs.  It has the same processor architecture though slightly lower clock speed, an open multitasking OS, a physical keyboard and separate graphics processor.  it is pretty significant.

The Droid Eris shines- if you want a phone that will look good doing what it does then this is your woman.  Until Verizon came into the game the HTC Hero was the most advanced Android phone on the market it was compared to the iPhone 3Gs and while a bit underpowered for such a comparison it stood up in the eyes of a lot of people.  It was a force to be reckoned with. The Eris is a redesigned and slightly upgraded version of the Hero.  It has the same basic specs with a slightly different form and a few added features. Processor wise it blows the iPhone 3G away and is comparable to most of the advanced Android phones.  it has multitasking capabilities and the same open OS.  The DROID ERIS still Does with power but it does it in style and elegance both software and hardware that the DROID lacks.

The DROID and DROID ERIS are the two most advanced Android phones out there.  The choice is do you pick Mrs. DROID with her sleek style and seductive elegance, arguably the most beautiful user interface in the realm of Android and a nicer physical design, or do you pick Mr. DROID with his utilitarian box shape and Vanilla User interface but significantly more muscle.  That is up to you.  Honestly it is hard to go wrong with either.  For me it was Droid because the virtual keyboard on the Eris frustrated me and I knew that even if I used the virtual one on the Droid for quick things I would always pull out the physical keypad for longer more complex uses.  Also the virtual keypad on the DROID seems more responsive or at least for me easier to hit the right key even though it looks like the Eris' keypad is better designed.  Basically play with them a few times if possible.  I went from really wanting the DROID to hating it the first time I played with one and I wanted the ERIS then I hated it after playing with it.  Then I went back and loved the DROID and finally got to play with an ERIS and hated it.  I remained loving the DROID and not being able to use the ERIS effectively so I got a DROID cause I wasn't about to get a blackberry or winmo device and I love the one I got so much more than any of the store models.  Once you make it yours it is a dream unless you have issues in which case you try to solve it and see what you can do.  I can't wait to see the future phones but I am happy with my next two years  so far.

Eris.  Here's why:

1. Much more aesthetically appealing than the Droid (personal preference)

2. Lack of hardware keyboard (don't need it, don't want it, don't like moving parts on my phone)

3. HTC Sense UI pwns all, even if it is only Android 1.5

The main cons would be weak processor, small screen, and pathetic battery life.  The processor is a bit sluggish at times, but I don't play graphic-heavy games, and for most everything else, it's adequate.  The screen is only 3.2" to the iPhone/iPod Touch's 3.5", but it runs the exact same resolution, so you're not really losing any work area on the screen.  The battery is what it is, but I typically don't have a problem making it through the day before charging, and hopefully larger-capacity batteries will become available soon.  The advantages of the Droid are primarily in the hardware department, and right now the interface is more important to me, i.e. Sense UI.  Also, an update to 2.0/2.1 for the Hero/Droid Eris is coming soon, so the software advantages the Droid has will be gone at that point as well.  All that said, I have my Eris on a 1-year contract, because there should definitely be a more high-powered Sense UI device available next year.  At that point, any non-HTC Android phone will simply pale in comparison interface-wise.

About the "killer" badge, I think both Droid phones are incomplete.  The Droid has the hardware, but is lacking some on the interface.  The Eris can blow the iPhone out of the water in terms of software, but the tired old 533MHz CPU just can't quite keep up, and the screen is a bit puny.  Put the Droid's CPU and screen on a Sense UI phone, and THEN you will have an iPhone killer.

That will definitely be coming next year.  They are already building phones on the snapdragon processor and some are officially announced and launching soon in Europe.  It won't be long before Verizon has its hands on a few of those bad boys.  The Passion is a rumor that is promising but in reality we won't know anything about it until it passes FCC.  Then maybe you will have your wish.  The only thing I can say about the Sense UI is your right it is king at the moment but it won't be long before a home screen replacement or similar comes out that will rival it and then its on.  I know Sense is more than a different home screen but the home screen is the look of it the functions go deeper though.  I am looking forward to upgrading in a year or two but there is always something more awesome just around the corner so I am not concerned with that.  This will keep me busy and then I will drool over what ever is next.  I just hope they stick with Mini USB B for data sync and charging and what not for a long time.  I hate buying new accessories for every stinking phone.

I agree with most things here aside from the UI being replaced with a better one. Nothing so far has came even close to the elegancy that SENSE provides.

Eh there have been a lot of things the likes of which had never been seen before that came to rapidly moving markets that got their 15 minutes and then faded into the sunset.  Sense will be around for a long time but I just have a feeling that within the next year it will either be downloadable without rooting or there will be an alternative that at least gives it a run for its money.  I do wish I could have sense on my Droid without all that rooting stuff but I am getting by.  I more so wish the directional pad was either gone or had a smaller design cause I hate reaching around it but there comes a point where you do with what you can get and love it for the year to two years.  Sense is great but it also isn't the end of the cool stuff road.
