This may be a "Marketplace issue", but has anyone else noticed that the My Verizon App has ceased to work?

It worked great for a week or so and now it either launches a Browser or gives the following message:

"Droid users, a new widget is available for WiFi - Please re-install and try again. For all other devices, please try again later"

Not really sure what the My Verizon App has to do with a WiFi Widget, nor do I know what re-installing anything has to do with it but this is what is happening.

Anyone?

I actually just checked and I am able to access it just fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled, checked my widgets and nothing.

Must be an Eris thing.

Works fine on my Eris.  All it does is access a VZW website, so if it's not working, that just means the site it's accessing is messed up.  It has nothing to do with the app.  The app literally does nothing but open a browser.

BTW, the My Verizon app is HORRIBLE.  It's easily the most awful, poorly "designed" app ever.  I put "designed" in quotes because the app wasn't designed at all, it just opens a browser to the mobile version of the My Verizon website.

I've seen the T-mobile Account Management android app and it's amazing.  It's an actual app with charts, and graphs, and usage statistics, and tons of good information presented in a nice gui with tabs and all.  It even lets you turn on alerts related to your account.  For instance if you're getting close to your minutes limit, you will get a notification on your phone.  Very useful.

The My Verizon "app" sucks SO bad, much like verizon's full blown website and My Verizon site.

Have you checked the Market to see if there is a newer version of your program available? Have you tried turning off your WiFi and accessing your account via Verizon's network to see if it will connect that way? It might be that when you are trying to access your account via WiFi, Verizon can not verify your account, as it would be able to do if you were accessing it via the Verizon data network.

Guys, thanks for your thoughts and Input!!

I have checked the market and there is not a newer version. I have tried this with Wi-Fi as well as 3G. From what I can tell (and I am a communications engineer) it really has nothing to do with my connection, there apparently is a “disconnect” between the App and what it "points to" in terms of the information it accesses. As I mentioned in my OP, it did work for the first week and then stopped.

I also checked the market last night and apparently the number of people experiencing this issue is growing each day.... As another poster mentions, the App really only accesses a webpage (a crappy webpage) showing the users VZW account statistics, so if the App no longer takes me to the VZW account statistics, one of two things is happening or has happened; either the path to the account information the App points to has changed or the path in the App has changed or become corrupted.

Bottom line is the App still attempts to open webpage; it just tries to access a URL that cannot get to the VZW account info.

FWIW I was unable to access My Verizon from a PC yesterday and earlier today, but it's working now as is the app on the phone.  Don't know if the two issues are related or not.

You might try "Clearing Cache" and/or "Clearing Data" from your default browser app.

Tried all that. Its weird, I can get to it no problem on my PC also, so I know the URL is correct, but its almost like there is something about the phone preventing the URL from opening! Weird thing is, except for installing a few apps, I have not messed with any native settings.

Really frustrating!

I am almost tempted to do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. Then again, I guess its not really a big deal!

Oh well...

Just curious. Does the same thing happen if you just open the browser and type the address:

https://mobile.vzw.com/myvzwportal

That's who I been waiting to hear from. :smileywink:

Yes Logicman, same thing (Straight to Google.com) even when I enter the URL directly into the Browser although sometimes doing that also gives the message from my OP:

"Droid users, a new widget is available for WiFi - Please re-install and try again. For all other devices, please try again later"

What's your thought?

A few ideas:

  • I assume that you have un-installed and reinstalled the "app", but I'll list it just in case.
  • Have you tried to login to your My Verizon account from the phones browser by going to http://www.verizonwireless.com to access the full desktop site?  If you can't login there, it may be that something is messed up with your My Verizon account.
  • Download XScope or Dolphin from the Market and try accessing the site with one of them.
