New to SmartPhones......help lol

Hello All. I look forward to your assistance. I just got a Galaxy II and have many, many questions. I will list them and if you can answer it, please do so. Thank youSmiley Happy  I just came over from AT&T and a Sony Erickson flip phone w/no features.

  • How do I keep the screen lit longer than the couple of seconds it currently stays on? Seems to go dark rather quickly.
  • Do I need a password for VoiceMail? I currently have one and it's annoying.
  • How do I delete unwanted apps that came with the phone? There is no trash can icon and apps like 'Color' are no longer available.
  • I keep getting the 'unable to connect to server' message for sent emails. Did I enter the wrong setup type? It looks good when I open the email icon up. I can compose and the address is correct. I just sent another message and got the 'sending failed' message. What am I doing wrong? I desperately need this for business.  Is it the stupid .net address supplied by MS365? I have had probs in the past with this. Some sites don;t recognize the .net as a legitimate address.
  • Is the big 'M' at the top of my screen for GMail only? It appears to be.
  • If I get on the internet and find what I want, do I need to go all the way out to avoid being charged usage time? Or can I just get the search result and let the screen go dark?
  • I received a message that voicemail was $2.99. I though that came with phone.
  • What navigation apps are available for free? I have a Garmin and will continue to us it if there is a fee for any of the nav options available.
  • How do I make assign a sound I recorded as a ringtone?

I will stop here but have a few more. I hope I can get some answers from those who are more SmartPhone savvy. Thank you.

A Galaxy II? Can you be more specific?

Yes you need a password for voicemail. I know ATT didn't used to require one until the last few years, but Verizon has always had a password to voicemail in the 13 years I have been with them.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

There are at least six Samsung Galaxy class android phones on the Verizon Wireless network.

Samsung Galaxy Note II

Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung DROID Charge

Samsung Galaxy Stellar

Samsung Fascinate

Samsung Continuum

Plus others I can't remember.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Let me try to answer as many of these as I can. I have a Samsung Stratosphere I, which is broadly in the Galaxy class of phones, so hopefully most of this will apply, though some things on your screens may look different.

  • How do I keep the screen lit longer than the couple of seconds it currently stays on? Seems to go dark rather quickly.

From the Home screen, press the Menu key, then Settings. Look for one that says something like Display settings, and in those settings look for something like Screen timeout. Tap that and select the option that best suits your need. Of course, you can always come back and change it later.

  • Do I need a password for VoiceMail? I currently have one and it's annoying.

Yes, as Ann explained.

  • How do I delete unwanted apps that came with the phone? There is no trash can icon and apps like 'Color' are no longer available.

Sigh. Many of us would like to be able to do this, and we can't. The (cr)app manufacturers pay Verizon to dump them into our phones, which allegedly lets Verizon sell the phones at a discount; therefore they are stuck to the phone like glue. If you phone has the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) operating system or later, you can disable them following these instructions. (I don't have this feature on my phone, so I can't verify this personally, but those on this forum who have access to it say that this does work).

This might depend on the type of e-mail account you're using, for instance, Yahoo, Comcast, Outlook, etc. I don't have experience with this issue myself, but if you specify the type of e-mail, someone here can probably advise.

  • Is the big 'M' at the top of my screen for GMail only? It appears to be.

Yes. There's a separate Email app for other types of e-mail.

  • If I get on the internet and find what I want, do I need to go all the way out to avoid being charged usage time? Or can I just get the search result and let the screen go dark?

You're not being charged usage time. The phone is always connected to the Internet while you have a data connection (4G/3G or Wifi), so there's no "usage time" to worry about. Instead, you're charged for the number of bytes that you upload and download per month. You have a certain set allowance built into your monthly fees (be sure and check to see how large it is), and you'll be charged extra if you go over that. I've never come close to my monthly limit, but I also don't stream movies or play online games. At any rate, once you've downloaded what you want, forget about it and move on to whatever you need to do next.

  • I received a message that voicemail was $2.99. I though that came with phone.

Not sure about that one. That may be for Visual Voice Mail, which is an add-on, extra cost "service." You shouldn't be billed for it if you didn't sign up for it.

  • What navigation apps are available for free? I have a Garmin and will continue to us it if there is a fee for any of the nav options available.

The navigation system built into the Maps app (which is Google maps) is free and very good (if a little bit challenged about pronouncing street names). Sell your Garmin on eBay and use the money to pay your Verizon bill.

  • How do I make assign a sound I recorded as a ringtone?

This too can probably be answered better by someone else, and may depend somewhat on the specific model of phone you have.

I hope this is helpful. Welcome to Verizon (passwords and all!), and to smartphones. I'm sure you'll find lots of ways to make it useful and fun.

Dave-in-Decatur. Thank you Very Much. (You too Ann) You have helped a lot. I don't want to hit the correct/helpful answer button yet. Being my first visit here, I'm not sure if that will close out the question.

My email address is from Office 365. It is for my business and is listed as myname@mybusiness.net  Since nothing was going through, I deleted the account and need to try again. I think some of the prob lies with my not knowing if it is a POP3 or SMTP or whathaveyou.

Again. Thanks to both of you. I look forward to learning more and maybe oneday being able to assist some other techno-boob such as myself.

If you set up folders for:

media

- audio

-- ringtones

-- notifications

-- alarms

on your SD card and put your mp3 files in the appropriate folder, you can then assign ringtones, notifications, and alarms using those sounds/files.

I don't know anything about the Office 365 e-mail system. But deleting the account and starting over would have been my suggestion, if I'd had one. Somewhere in the Office 365 documentation or help system, there should be that kind of basic info about their e-mail servers. Or try calling Verizon customer service (preferably not from your Stratosphere) and let them walk you through the setup; they may have accurate info about Office 365.

Believe me, we all started out as newbies. I'm sure you'll be pitching in here one day too!
