I have a Pixel and experienced the same problem with the Oreo update. From where you make calls tap the three dots to the right of the search bar, tap settings, tap voicemail, turn visual voicemail on then back off and it should fix the problem.

Hi,
I have been beating my head trying to check this, and check that. Called
them, we tried everything again. I did what you said and BAM ..
Automatically put the VM icon up.
Thanks so much!

Hi,
I got the fix, from a pixel user if you're interested, it sounds dumb, but
worked out on the first try. Open the phone app, go to settings, toggle the
visual voicemail switch, on -off, and it works. I just verified it was off,
as with everything else.
Thanks,
Rob

I kind of remember the Pixels might have had a similar situation when they were first released.
Since I prefer to use the basic non-visual voicemail, it didn't occur to me to turn on and off the voicemail setting to get the notifications working after the Oreo update. I still had my voicemail notifications after the update.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Unlocked Samsung galaxy s8. Didn't realize wasn't getting any voicemail notifications. Huge problem.
I've tried it all. Shut off visual voicemail. Enabled all app notifications. Called voicemail to try to turn on notication light but no such setting I could find.
This is moronic. I can't believe this issue still persists.
Thinking of switching carriers after 20 years.
Any other ideas before I go?

This didn't work for me because visual voicemail isn't an option in the voicemail settings. I don't know what to do to make it work. (I have a galaxy note 9)

We certainly want you to be able to review your voicemails. I know that I rely on my voicemail a lot especially during the work day when I can't answer my phone. What steps did you take with this Dubi13? What do you see when you go into settings?

We are here to help with any concerns you have about your Voicemail notifications, bubu40. Allow us to gather more information to be on the same page. When was the last time you received a notification for your voicemail? What changed with your phone before the notifications stopped?

Another unlocked Motorola One Action checking in with the problem. Don't know when it stopped working.
Android 10 (upgraded from 9 a few weeks ago)
Prepaid plan
Stock phone dialer
Notifications set to show
Did the turn on/off Visual Voicemail trick, rebooted.
Changing my voicemail greeting to indicate that notifications don't work.
