Verizon Wireless Should Provide SIP Service for Data Users

Smartphone users with WiFi capability long to make phone calls using their local networks. This provides them with a solid connection, and reduces load on Verizon's expensive cell infrastructure.

Currently, this is difficult to accomplish, as it requires extensive configuration, often using Gizmo5 + Google Voice. The main hurdle is SIP service.

If Verizon offered SIP service as a standard component of its smartphone data package, users would opt to use it instead of an outside provider. This would encourage loyalty to Verizon.

Users would benefit because Verizon would make it a transparent process, and users could use their single assigned cell phone number, instead of the multiple numbers that would be required otherwise.

Tmobile is the only Wireless provider that currently offers this.  If you have an SIP account though you can use Fring.

Verizon just announced a partnership with Skype. I wonder how they will set up the calls internally. It would be cool if they arranged to use the VZW number instead of a Skype one for phone calls using the Skype system.

The calls on Skype are going to require 3G so it will be about like making calls using Google Voice except it will be over the data stream instead of voice system so in theory you could be on the phone and using data at the same time.  However, Skype out costs 2 cents per minute so essentially you might as well just use your phone.  You won't be charged minutes if you use Skype but Skype will charge you 2 cents per minute but you will have to have a 3G signal.  So there is no advantage to using Skype unless you are calling someone overseas who has Skype so you can make Skype to Skype calls without using minutes.  But you could just use Google Talk for that.  So yeah I don't really understand why the Skype thing is such big news.

Great now we have VOIP but it is limited to 3G so we still have to have a signal but not just a signal a good 3G signal.  You can call people who have Skype but since we have always had Skype on the phone and Fring lets you connect to your Skype and also lets you use your Skype out over data and I believe it isn't limited to 3G so this big announcement is now we are partnering with Skype to provide a service you can already get without our arbitrary limitations from several other sources.  Hmm yeah thanks guys.  Love these strategic partnerships that provide what is already provided with odd restrictions that not only make no sense but make the official partnership solution pretty well useless in comparison to what we already have.
