Verizon "Connect" plan unavailable for Droid users??

So I was looking through the available plans and noticed the "family connect plan" @ 1400min with 2 lines would be $139.99.  This plan includes unlimited texting, email and data so I figured I'd switch to that plan and save a few $$$.

First I tried it online, but it said "I had to upgrade my phones" (both are Motorola Droids).  I then called customer service and was told that I'm not allowed to get the "Family Connect plan" as I have Droids, but I could get the "select" plan and would then have to pay the $30 per phone data charge as well ($120 + $60 = $180 per month).

Although I "kind of" understand this.... can someone please explain to me WHY Verizon is "forcing" the data plan on me even though they have plans that include all the same features as the data plan??  ((you know, besides trying to milk more money out their customers))

I guess I fail to see why we're not allowed to pick the "family connect plan" with a Droid since that includes everything we would need for the Droid to work without "hidden" costs.

Any thoughts on this... suggestions, etc?

Thanks.

The connect plan is available to users that have regular phones (not smart phones). It does give you unlimited mg usage and mobile email. But on a regular phone you wont get emails pushed to your handset  and you wont get the same web experience on a non smart phone. It's simple why Verizon has 2 different plans one for smartphones and one for regular phones......smart phones are data hogs always sending a receiving data....regular phones aren't....there made for basic internet usage.

The reason is that the amount of data potentially used (will be used by most Droid users) is many times that which any other phone would use (except maybe a *few* Blackberry users)

If someone is NOT using 10 or 100 X the data that those plans were designed and priced for, that person is not getting the most out of their Android phone and really should be considering a different less-feature rich, less web-centric phone.

I had the same question.  I've been a verizon customer for years and I am fed up with their greed.  My phone just died and I'm out of my contract, so verizon and I are probably going to part ways.   The data may be 10x more than a non-smartphone, but its still not very much data.  I just don't buy it.  I believe on average smart phones are still moving tiny amounts of data.   This is just like the thousand times profit that they make on text messages.  I believe its only designed to fleece the customer and has no relationship to what it actually costs to provide a service.  I know its not just verizon, but I believe they seem to always be raising it to new heights.  I think practices like this are just more fuel for the impending government clamp down on the cell phone companies.  Spank em hard I say.

Another forum user said it better than I ever could in another thread:

It's so funny how people complain about having to pay for their services. It's like getting a car and complaining that they have to pay for gas. Ahh, consumers.

Don't want to pay for data? Get a phone that isn't a smart phone. Want a Droid? Pay for the Data plan.

You would be surprised how much data phones can go through on a cell phone network. Iphones are putting so much strain on AT&T's network that talks of certain caps or tiered data plans could be in the works for iphone users since the majority of their network is being used by iphone users. Not to mention that they are probably doing this since they are reaching the limit of data that can be supported.

i have the AMERICA'S CHOICE II FAMILYSHARE  PLAN (ancient but my huband has not had a new phone in ages so we never had to update our plan) and online it says that it is one of the phones compatible with the droid.  not sure how that can be.
