Why can't I run Google?

Have you tried accessing Google via https://www.google.com, to see if you can reach it that way? And are you sure you are typing www.google.com in the address bar?

Are you connecting to an open wifi connection?

Chrome didn't work either, so you couldn't use https

This appears to be the problem.  I was in a hotel. When I returned home to my own network, everything worked again.
