Why is my smartphone now stupid?

With the latest update, a new layer of abject stupidity has been applied, resulting in a device that second-guesses almost every input and command.

I cannot overstate how infuriating this is.

First, I cannot add a pause and PIN number to my VM number. Regardless of what I do (and I've even called tech support), the dialer no longer recognizes the "comma pause"--and I haven't seen a solution (unless one has come up in the last few days.

Sleep mode is no longer available. And if I do want to power down, I have to press. TWICE. This is more efficient...how?

When I receive a call, I cannot simply answer it. I get an icon in the middle of the screen, which has to be pressed in order to just acknowledge I'm getting a call. And then I have to press the green phone icon if I want to talk to the person calling. Do I really need that extra step? Am I incapable of choosing for myself and so require that extra tap?

The list goes on. If you've had to update, you've been forced to incorporate these changes. Was this update intended to pacify those who aren't smart enough to use a smartphone? Shouldn't people have to take a test to show they know what they're doing? Instead, we have this egalitarian "leveling of the field" that drags some people down just so others can feel better. How does this help?

If this is the case, why not take it one step further? If I want to dial a number, and I press "2," I should see a pop-up: "The number 2 will be added to the end of the numbers being dialed." I press "7": "The number 7 will be added to the end of the numbers being dialed."

Why is it not possible to choose whether we want to see these new "features?" One of the reasons I came to the Droid 4 was because of the choices it offered, but now those have stripped away. Now we've been handed the equivalent of broadband tin cans.

If this is what now passes for a "smartphone," when can I expect to see a "smarter phone," where I'm actually responsible for the buttons/icons/screens I tap, and I have to deal with the consequences?

I'm not usually one for suffering rants, but this part was great. Do be careful what you wish for.

"Abject layer of Stupidity" = Smarter Phone. The progressive dumbing down of American society is an amazing thing to witness. The final apocalyptic decline and crash of "American Exceptionalism" will be an exquisite catastrophe indeed.  Awareness of this impending demolition begins with a forum poster noticing his smart phone getting stupid. Or is it the other way around?

I just love Dimap52 reply. May I add that we as consumers have this passion for gadgetry in making our lives simplified in that our cell phone evolution has gone from pressing keys to dial numbers to just speaking the name or number.

we expect our phones today to order us food and drinks and cruise the web, turn our security systems on and off, hook in to our cable box, and many other tasks. The double answer is a buffer to ignore a call, I have myself found that in some cases by the time I unlock my screen and push the green answer button the call is lost. But if you set the phone to auto answer you end up with a caller speaking to your pocket or desk etc. it seems the smarter your phone gets the dumber we are getting.

but that is technological progress.

Totally agree with everything.  It's just funny when people say my bill is so high, well that's because you have a smart phone and have to pay for that data package.  I have 2 basic phones and together we're not even hitting $90 a month, that's what someone with a discount and on the cheapest data plan can get for 1 line!

But anyways, that's how it is with the new Z10 you start typing a word and the whole word pops up and you literally fling the word into the text bubble, people are going to forget how to spell things, people can't do the most simple tasks anymore.
