Two days ago, my Xperia stopped being able to send or receive pictures via MMS messaging. I get a "message failed to download".
I've tried different text apps, with the same results.

What APNs do you have listed in network settings?

Same as mine. Perhaps settings got changed, or SIM card is faulty, or signal is weak.

If I send a text picture directly from my photo album, it sends just fine. If I'm already in a text app, it will not send.

Try going into your app manager and finding your text app. Clear its cache. This might help. You might also try Verizon Messages+ if all else fails, but I know you'd rather get this stock app working correctly.
