supitsmike wrote:Alright, so for those of you who are keeping up with the news on Android and phones, some of you may have came across the speculation of some of the Android phones not recieving the 2.0 update. Some of you may not.
To bring you up to speed, and to make a long story short: We don't know if first generation Android phones will be recieving the 2.o Eclair update. If you don't know if your phone is a first generation Android device, I'll list it:
-T-Mobile myTouch.
-T-Mobile Motorola Cliq
-T-Mobile G1
-T-Mobile Behold II
-Sprint's HTC Hero
-Sprint's Samsung Moment
-HTC Droid Eris
Most of you will have the Eris and ask many questions as to why you may not recieve the update, I'm going to explain to you guys the reason why you may not.
All the phones on your list; save for the G1 and MT3G -will recieve an OS update. It won't be a full fledged 2.x firmware - though, it will be a significant update. It will be a more refined OS than 1.5 and will borrow much of the features and "feel" of 2.x device's firmware.

Personally, I kind of think there needs to be a quick update of a few of the major apps that come with the phone. The problem is, that unlike the apps you download from the market, the apps that come with the phone aren't listed in the Android Market queue of downloaded apps that you already have installed. There are definitely a could of items in the GMail app that could use some enhancement. For what it's worth, I've heard that someone has fixed the autofocus bug with the camera app. (Where I can go to pick that up would be much obliged if anyone can provide a link.)
On the other hand, I have a felling that this update will be released sometime around the same time as the Adobe Flash update comes in. Hopefully Adobe will also roll out a PDF app for Android too.

Correct, they will receive Eclair...but like a half of an Eclair. It's going to be Donut root OS with bits and pieces of OS to give it the general look, "feel", and slight upgrade in performance for the update.

I have read on multiple sites that HTC has already confirmed the Eris will be getting 2.0, recently they announced they were already done with it and porting the Sense UI but have to test everything extensively before releasing it. I think you should have done more research before making this thread.

You're probably one of those kids who read what is writtin and forget about the fine print at the bottom of the page.
[edit] the point of the thread was to tell everyone they were going to get 2.0...
Just not the full 2.0. Whether it be for reasons A, B, or C. Though thanks for the bump -- it'll give everyone a real understanding as to how it works.
@Williana -- Thanks.

I honestly think it's a processing limitation that they won't get "the full monty" with Eclair. It might work ok, but it wouldn't be as smooth as they might have hoped.
I've been studying up on the Eclair SDK's and there's infrastructure that really relies on having a first-rate CPU/GPU. From the looks of it though HTC is going to do what they can, and Verizon's statement recently equates to "we're not getting in the way".
Thumbs up on Verizon. I realize they can't comment on exactly where everything is in validation, but the gestures the company has been making is encouraging.
