after the update I cannot access my phone using fingerprints. what do I do?

I have had problems in the past using the fingerprint to access my phone.  I tried to turn it off but could not.  Now, it doesn't recognize the fingerprint and just keeps telling me to try again at longer and longer intervals without the option of using the password.  Right now the phone is a brick. Suggestions?

Which phone model do you have? Does it ever ask for the backup password?
