dialpad previously showed automatically only when speakerphone was selected
software updates were recently installed automatically and shut down the phone

I can definitely discuss this matter further. What make & model device do you have? Also, is the phone currently totally shut down, or are you able to use it to some degree? It sounds like changes may have been made in the interface.
