Connect the phone to your pc with the supplied USB chord. Once everything is working, you should see a new letter designating a new "hard drive'" This is your phone. Than just make a new folder on your pc giving it a recognizable titel such as "My Phone" or something like that, that drag the stuff you want from the phone to this new folder.
However, doing a factory reset does not mean that you will lose everything. Contacts are not lost. your apps can be found in the play store. and there is an apps for your computer called My Adroid Apps. However, either way, you will probably lose all the data you had entered. For example, if you downloaded an apps for spreadsheets, any date you entered into it will probably be lost. As for the drag and drop first discussed, you may be able to save this data.

@Mattlili
I understand not wanting to lose your device's data when resetting your phone! I'm including a link to the hard reset steps, which includes links for transferring data prior to the reset. http://vz.to/Z0pngQ Your contacts should be syncing with your Backup Assistant account, and/or Google. I hope this helps. Thanks!
