As always, restart the phone first, but if that doesn't solve it, then which messaging app are you using, and what model phone? If you use a different messenger app, does the issue persist?
If the trouble is only on one messenger app, try going to Application Manager in the Settings, select the app, and Clear Cache.
If the trouble is in multiple messenger apps, try going to "Backup & reset" in your settings and select "Reset network settings" if your phone has that option.
