Any chance they were saved to your Google account? Which cloud were you using? Is the phone no longer in your possession? If it is, is the screen so bad that you cant boot it up and see whats on the screen long enough to do a backup to the card, SIM, or another cloud?
Check to see if they were saved to the Google Account (a much better place to save and backup to anyway. If not go into Verizon Cloud and check the Trash Can. Every once in a while Verizon Cloud decides you do not need your contacts and deletes them or most of them. If they are in the trash can, move them back to the storage, save them all on the phone as Google Contacts and do not use Verizon Cloud. If they are already on Google, make sure they are all on Google and do nothing else
