Yesterday my Galaxy sIII started prompting me to log in to the cloud.
I've had my phone over a year.
I can't figure out what I have done to create this issue.

You've probably done nothing. The phone settings could be configured to auto update apps. It seems Verizon Cloud has now replaced Backup Assistant as the native back up by default.
