Feel stupid asking this, but how do you "shift" to use the symbols on the qwerty keyboard? (dont have my manual with me, just got it last night)

The manual says just to tap and hold - haha, i did this and it works. Also - hers a manual in the pdf format: http://www.htc.com/us/faq_detail.aspx?p_id=306&act=um

Hit one of the Alt keys, then the key that has the symbol/number you want. Easy for me to remember because the "Alt" is the same color as the numbers/symbols.
