A 5 digit number is known as a short code. Example 32665 (FBOOK) for Facebook. You text it the same way you would a 7 or 10 digit number. I'm not sure if Verizon blocks some short codes, but I've never had any issues with texting a short code number (bank, insurance co. etc).
ELISTU90, we want to keep you connected, via text message. You have the option to purchase or subscribe to paid messaging programs offered by third-party content providers. These programs offer one-time purchases and/or monthly subscriptions, which you pay for in addition to the standard charges that are included in your messaging plan. You typically participate by sending a text message to a special 4, 5 or 6-digit number, known as a Short Code. Examples of these programs include interactive voting during TV shows, trivia or horoscope subscriptions, weather alerts, downloadable wallpaper or ringtones and more. Are you trying to send a premium text message? Which make/model phone do you have?

Keep in mind when texting subscription based content, be careful, as some of these services charge outrageous amounts for those services. I've seen per text fees of $9.99 PER text charged. Read the fine print. And normally these charges cannot be disputed because you subscribed and agreed to the charges.
