I would like to buy my 13 year old an apple watch to use as a phone. He does not have a phone though so i was wondering if I could set the apple watch up with my phone on my Verizon account, but set it up with a different phone number.

you are asking if the watch can be used as a stand alone device. It was not designed so, the answer is no.

Apple has no interest in eliminating its phone from the equation.

Yes, the watch would have its own phone number, but it would also share all of the alerts, calls and messages with your phone if you linked it to that

So the Apple Watch would get all the phone notifications, and the calls and messages, but it could also have a different phone number that also receives separate messages?

What if I set it up with a phone and then deactivate the phone? Could I then just use that phone to control all the settings for the Apple Watch and use a different phone?

If the iPhone linked to the Apple watch is deactivated/suspended the Watch would cease to connect independently to the wireless network, it could still show the current time, or use apps not requiring a connection such as games but calls/messages/updates would not work

That is a great question Ninjaspywizard. I want to provide the steps for you to turn off the NumberShare option on your device. Please click the following link to complete: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-213055/ . Does this provide clarity?

Good you ask, we know it is important to know the details and options on your Apple watch and we want to provide you with the correct information. The service itself of Number Share cannot be disabled from the watch settings itself. To disable this option you need to sign into your my verizon account. Does this help clarify your concern?

So once I disable this in my Verizon account, I can set my Apple Watch up and when I’m done it will have a different phone number than the phone itself?

No, the setup is done prior to the number share feature being disabled in the account. But once disabled, the Apple Watch would only have the different phone number programmed and assigned to it.
With the number share disabled, the watch would no longer be able to be used for calls, messages or data since it would not be linked to your iPhone anymore.

Yeah... I’m starting to suspect they have bots on the VZW side as the responses don’t seem to Indicate they understand the question.
