Can you use data roaming in the USA without incurring extra charges?

I always thought if you data roamed you'd be slammed with the extremely high per megabyte charges that you get in other countries. I read in a few places that you are allowed to turn it on and you will be fine in the country.

Yes, generally you should be fine in the US with most of the modern plans. If you are on America Choice etc, things might be different. I don't know about the Alltel plans. With the Talk and Text (or whatever today's plans are called!) the only issue is near the international borders. It's possible to pick up a signal from towers in Canada when you are near that border when US signals are too weak. If you have data roaming enabled, you will be connected to that Canadian CDMA network, and, unless you have an international data plan, you will get roaming charges.
