I Phone 5 BOGUS DATA OVERAGES

Although Apple and Verizon issued a JOINT PRESS RELEASE *weeks* ago regarding the bogus data overage charges that Verizon I Phone 5 owners are accruing, when you call customer service in *both* companies, you are told that employees are UNAWARE of the issue and have not heard anything about it. My typical "Share Everything" usage is the following: July 2012=2.4 GB August 2012=2.8 GB September 2012=2.5 GB. Here comes the purchase of the I Phone 5. October= 6GB's used with TWO WEEKS LEFT in the cycle. I just had to increase my GB for this cycle to a whopping 8 GB's. The press release states that Verizon customers will not be charged for the overage-yet customer service cannot say how Verizon will know which customers were effected. Apple has issued a so called FIX on there support website, yet the Fix DOESN'T WORK. Since the fix-4 days ago, we have blown through *3* GB's. I finally got a tech support person on the line from Verizon this morning who acknowledged this is a problem. (Ya think? it's on the front page of the New York Times and Huffington Post). The tech support person told me "there is no fix". but that she would be happy to send me a text message with my reference number to keep checking back to see if and when a true fix comes out. The problem is: I Phone 5 AND older versions that have had the IOS6 update, are being charged for WiFi usage. These are bogus charges to customers. I have zero confidence that when I call in for my credits at the end of the billing cycle, that it will be a smooth process. And because there is "No fix"-per Verizon...I have to look forward to the same thing next month. I have an idea Verizon: LIsten up!! THE FIX SHOULD BE TO PUT *ALL* I PHONE 5 OWNERS ON *UNLIMITED DATA* UNTIL YOU FIND A FIX. This way, your customers are not being charged bogus data charges and wasting countless hours of their time on the phone with your reps, wasting their time (which you are paying for) to tell us there is no fix!!

Yes contact them.  If the research I've done is all accurate, it's a problem that won't likely stop before you go over and get charged!  Verizon credited me last month and said they will this month again.  I also heard today from a VZW rep that when the iPhone 5 goes into sleep mode, it disables the wifi??  No one knows why, just that it's another bug, but that basically means all of the updates and such that are done at night are using your data even when you think it's connected to a wifi.

Apple is also aware of the problem, but doesn't have a solution... as sad and frustrated as that is!  Hopefully this will help you understand or at least give you ammunition before you call in.  I had to call in 5-6 times in the last 2 months before I finally got a Rep that would listen and do something rather than tell me it was just me and to use less data!  And that was just last night!

This article explains it a bit more, but the "solution" doesn't actually solve the problem they realized AFTER publishing this as a solution.

Apple might not be done apologizing just yet.

Just days after issuing a mea culpa for the lackluster quality of its Maps application for iOS 6, Apple is again acknowledging a problem with its new iPhone: This time, it's a bug that's causing Verizon customers to go through huge amounts of cellular data even though they are connected to a Wi-Fi network...

Good luck!

they told me I can use her upgrade at the end of december and have it switched to my phone. as long as i dont activate the phone on hers she will keep her unlimited data.

If you use your grand-daughter's upgrade, it's the same as her using it, i.e., she will lose her unlimited data and have to choose a tiered data plan.

Funny, but I got a reply to my post that said it doesn't matter what AT&T does... and I agree, they are a different business which I cannot stand for another reason.  But here is the point: I had unlimited data, but when I upgraded my phone I could not renew the unlimited data plan.  My buddy, who has AT&T, has upgraded several times on both his iPhone and iPad and, since his account is grandfathered, he has always maintained his unlimited data plan.  His ACCOUNT is grandfathered, bot his PHONE!  Point being, my ACCOUNT had unlimited data and should have been grandfathered as such.... making the reply I got completely asinine!

read how many people did this in the forums, as long as it doesn't get activated on that account it won't change her data plan.

If your granddaughter's line has unlimited data and you upgrade her line or transfer her upgrade to your line, then you've extended her line for two years, i.e., you've signed a new contract, thus her unlimited is gone and she will have to choose a tiered data plan.

Yes..the absolute only way to keep unlimited data is purchasing the device through other means..like craigslist or a friend. Once you have activated a Verizon bought phone on her line, it resets the contract and switches you to share everything. It's printed right on the receipt.

In any case...has anyone checked their data, lately? My bill just reset 5 days ago and I haven't gotten a text alert that I'm over, yet-so I'm crossing my fingers!

You also can pay full retail for a phone through Verizon and keep your unlimited data.  And it doesn't "switch you to share everything" ... you only switch if you want to; unless you have an older plan, you can choose a tiered data plan (i.e., $30 for 2 GB data).

Headlines are out today stating that Apple has released the IOS 6.0.2 UPDATE which specifically addresses the 3 month WiFi issue.

HOPEFULLY this will work this time. My phone is not showing an update but I have read articles that at this time, it is only available through the I Tunes Store.

I am also hearing rumors that it is only available for the I Phone 5. I have read in many forums that people with the 4S are also having problems and Verizon told me that the problem was with IOS 6 and not a particular version of your I phone model.

We have both the I Phone 5 *and* the 4S so we will see. If I can get 1 of the phones fixed..there is half my data usage! I will report back after I do the update, reset my phone usage and compare to what Verizon "says" that I have used....

Right. We did the update too-the moment that it came out and it doesn't appear to have done any good. I have now installed wifi at work AND upgraded my wifi router at home. I also have cellular data turned completely off so my usage should be close to *zero* and my new cycle started today. See if this helps. At this point, I will just be happy if I don't have to call into Verizon for credits monthly.

Question-since I can't use my smartphone as a smartphone and I have to manually turn wifi on/off and cellular data on/off-can I send pictures when I am using wifi? I keep getting delivery fail messages when I am trying to send pictures when on wifi with cellular turned off?

They do go through when I am sending them over wifi through i message-but my husband has an android and I can't send him pictures?

Hope someone knows the answer to this!

You have to send/receive photo texts on Verizon's cellular network; they won't go through on wi-fi

Thank you! I have figured out that they *will* go through as imessages-but that's it.

The work around is sending them via email and they do go through on wifi. LOL-ALLLL of these workarounds!!

Just to let you know that you are wrong I went to the verizon store today and they transfered my grand daughter's upgrade to my line and it did not take her unlimited data away. They then upgraded my line to an iphone 5 and it still left her with unlimited data. I also double checked the account when I got home and she still has unlimited data.

well heres the thing you may have it now but thats only because of how they coded it in the computer they put it in as "CE" which means customer provided which would be like buying at full retail but Verizon goes over accts with upgrades to add promos or whatever once they see that an upgrade was done if its after June 28th 2011 they WILL remove your data and put you automatically on 2gb happened to me but im over it now but yes it will happen

I did check it and its still unlimited. It has stayed unlimited since i gave her my iphone 5 that i got by upgrading to the iphone 5 on my line which put my line on the tiered data plan. the guy at the store traded her upgrade to my line then upgraded my line that was already on the tiered data.

I am glad that it worked for you!

Curious to see if anyone is still having the maddening data overage charges? This is month 4-I checked my bill today and low and behold, I had $60 in data overage charges. Funny thing is: the breakdown is as follows:

(I have a 4 GB plan)

Used: 6 GB Charge for extra 2 GB= $45.00 LOL!! The "charge" for exceeding by 2 GB is $15.00 NOT $45.00

Additional Line item reads " Unbilled Data from prior months" $15.00

What the hell is "unbilled data from prior months" when Verizon has had to credit me back for the past FOUR consecutive months, SINCE the purchase of the I Phone 5 in October!!

They credited me the $60.00 today but once again..I had to call in and spend a half hour on the phone of MY TIME that has not been previously billed to THEM!

The tech told me there is STILL NO FIX but that they received a memo dated December 2012 that yet *another* carrier update will be released soon to *hopefully* fix the wi fi issue.

Incidentally-I have wi fi at home/wi fi at work. There is NO WAY that 6 GB were used in a cycle. Prior to the purchase of the I Phone 5...our highest usage in a cycle was 2.8 in 3+ years.

Check your bills, people!! They are now charging $45.00  for 2 extra gigs, when it should be $15.00

The drama continues....

I think there is more a problem with the tiered data plan. I recently noticed before i upgraded again that my droid was charging data usage while i was sick in bed and the only thing the phone was being used for was texting. My detailed data usage times were the same as the text times so i think they don't have the tiered data right.
