Pros and cons of Vzw iPad

I‘ve never posted in a forum, so please pardon my inexperience.

I am looking to switch from an iPad 2 mini to the iPad 4 mini.  What benefits and disadvantages are there with purchasing from Verizon compared to the Apple Store?

Why does Verizon assign a phone number to the ipad?

If you purchase from any cellular provider, you will pay more, you will have cellular service and possibly a minimum term of service unless you pay full price. The number is data only

You could purchase a Wifi only device for less, but not from a cell provider
