iPhone 5: LTE dropping bars

Just received the iPhone 5.  When switched on, it shows 5 bars and LTE.  Over the following 30 seconds, it slowly drops down to one bar.  When I make or receive a call, it jumps to 5 bars again.  However, when I disconnect, it slowly drops back to one bar (dropping one bar at a time every few seconds).  Any ideas?

is that happening in more than one place or have you not had time to kind of compare being in other places.  No idea though why it would do that, for my normal non Apple phone it usually cuts it down when i connect to wifi

Phone calls have different bars then data. Data can go up and down quickly but as long as your 4g you should be fine.

I dont think the iPhone 5 has bars for LTE, it usually only shows signal quality for calls and a LTE icon for LTE...   Correct me if I am wrong, this may have changed.

These posts have been helpful.  I did several speed tests of my phone on 4G and the download speed was about 3 mbps.  I don't believe that's anywhere near what 4G can do.  I am wondering if anyone with an LTE iPad experiences the same issues?

@dpny - Have you tried powering your phone off and removing the sim card for about 30 seconds to see if the phone maintains it signal better?

Everyone, let us know if your signal has stabilized or if this helps you as well.

Thank you everyone, and take care!

Thank you to everyone for the replies.  Restarting the phone had no effect nor did removing the sim card, resetting the phone, completely erasing the phone, etc.

I spent an hour on the phone with Verizon and 2 hours on the phone with Apple (by the way, both representatives promised to call me back to follow up and neither did--poor customer service from both Verizon and Apple).  They ended up deciding that the phone and/or sim card was defective.  I took it to an apple store, exchanged the phone.  I still have the same issue in the one location, although the signal is now a bit more consistent elsewhere.

Wildman: it does have bars for LTE.  When I have only 1 bar, it is really, really, slow (think 20 seconds to load google.com)

ok sept 27th now i called verizon and thier reply is you are on the edge of LTE or 4G but you are in the extended area for such, so if i get it i get it if not  too bad i guess, but what is puzzeling to me is Verizon is on tv boasting all the time about having the largest 4G / LTE coverage? seems not so i my area.

No disrespect, I understand your frustration but you do understand the largest doesn't mean that they are covering everywhere, they are still expanding the network and it takes time to cover all areas.

Since you are experiencing it in the same place regularly I would guess it is a limit coverage in that are for now.

For those being told to swap iPhone 5 HW or Nano SIM, I can report that neither will fix this problem.

** UPDATE FROM VZW - PLEASE READ **

I spoke with "Robert" in Tech support. You reach tech support by calling to report a device problem 800-922-0204, reaching customer service and telling them you need to speak with Tech support.

Robert told me that every ticket I had opened previously with VZW was pointless because those tickets only go to the local tower team.

Robert stated that the way that these issues are escalated inside of Verizon is via their internal "device forum", which is similar to the Community on verizonwireless, but only accessible by members of their technical staff.

There is no way to reach Robert back again thanks to VZW not allowing any direct inbound communication.

Robert posted a forum post internally at VZW under the following title:

"iphone 5 loses 4g lte"

Posted: 10-02-2012 3:53P ET

He claims this post will also be found if they are under your device (iPhone 5) and simply search for "lte" in the forum.

My request to EVERYONE experiencing this problem is to immediately call VZW at 800-922-0204 and register the behavior you are experiencing with them, ask them to add your information to this forum post and ask them to TEXT YOU confirmation that this was done. Texting you gets recorded on your account for future reference.  Please do this in addition to contact 800-MY-APPLE and opening up a case that references the forum post below. Do not bother to report to an Apple Store "Genius" bar or a Verizon Wireless store directly as neither has yielded me any results.

Per my earlier response above,
