new iphone 5 + $70/month limited tiered 2gb/month plan = no hotspot ?? FCC rules violation?
electronicsguy

Hello all,

I got a new iphone 5 from the verizon store in michigan. I chose the $70/month plan with 450 minutes + 2gb/month data. So it is a LTE capable phone offered by Verizon on a limited tiered data plan.

Now according to the FCC decision, Verizon is not supposed to block hotspot tethering on this plan on a phone which uses the LTE spectrum. (details here: http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-315501A1.pdf)

However, I am unable to enable the hotspot or tethering feature. When I try to enable personal hotspot, it shows a popup on the screen saying "contact verizon" by either going to the website or calling them.

This is contrary to the verizon obligations under the FCC requirements. I have written a letter to verizon but haven't heard back from them. Its obvious that the hotspot has not been provisioned on this account but why I don't know.

Is anyone else having the same problem? If so, did you get it resolved?

thanks,

I will do none of that Brian, since I don't need to.

and i don't need to do any sneaky things like you.

But verizon does need to follow FCC rules, which they dont seem to.

Are you out of any other conspiracy theories or do you have any more of those to make, rather than cogent arguments?

Then do without because that's your other choice. I don't why you are arguing like you have some kind of pull that can make Verizon give you free tethering. Do you think you're the first person to argue about this? Anyone here know of ANYONE that has gotten free tethering on old plans? anyone...anyone... Beuller.....?

I am not the one who said Vza has to give free tethering. Its the FCC who said that.

Eguy isent the everything plan mean in your thought the teathering your not paying for. It's included. The nationwide plan has been here for years. The tiered last year. Vzw Does what it does the cheapest way to comply. Wait untill next year they will come out a new rule. Vzw expect the unexpected. If you had a choice then you choice what you choose. If you didn't like options it's in you. Is atat any different? Does sprint do different?

I know what I chose.

I know what Verizon should follow according to the rules.

Yes mods please close this thread since its pointless to hear the same insane arguments from vzw-fans.

Oh please keep us informed on what corporate says. I know what they will say. I just want to see you post some whiny posts when they don't agree with you. Think LOGICALLY, if Verizon wanted to give free tethering to the old plans wouldn't they be doing it already?

No because till recently they were not required to. The key is in 'required'.

You should be happy you don't have to do everything plan from what I'm hearing you would pay more

But they're not complying... thats the whole point.

when you 'comply' you have to comply with everything - even if they are older plans, as long as you offer them to NEW customers.

they can't pick n choose compliance plans.

Now who is the one that can't read? I clearly posted the agreement between Verizon and the FCC. Quit trying to make 2+2=5 just because you want it to be.

you didnt' post anything new. and you didnt' read clearly. They cannot block tethering apps simple, whether 1st or 3rd party.

enjoy NOT having tethering. Personally if I really wanted tethering I'd quit beating my head against a wall. Apparently you like it.

Yes, see at&t was forced to offer facetime over cellular after a threat of lawsuit. (just a week ago). They were adamant before, saying they will not offer it unless you have their higher priced plans.

I mean, what part of net neutrality do they not get? my data is 2gb- your compliance to rules is to allow me to use it as i want.

That was different because they were forcing people off contracts they had already agreed to. Apples and oranges.

nopes. even for people with keeping older contracts, they were being blocked. read carefully. nothing to do with forcing people off contracts - that was a separate issue.

apples and apples my friend.

Didn't they offer you both choices?

Ofcourse. I chose this because it suits me better. I don't talk unlimited and I would rather have 450 min + 2gb data with $70/month than just 300 MB + unlimited talk.

thats what plans are right - you choose what is best for you.

but under the rules, tethering should be included in this plan. Now before you ask me why I want to tether on this - thats really my business and nobody elses.
