I've been using backup assist for a year but I just started getting a message saying that it needs permission to access my contacts and to go under settings/privacy to allow. When I go there, backup assist doesn't appear. I've also tried to see if I can allow by going to backup assist under settings and there is no option to allow. Help.
delete the app and readd it and run

I want to make sure you have a reliable way to back up your device. I'm terribly sorry that uninstalling & reinstalling was inneffective. Have any other apps on your device started asking for permissions in this way? Do you use any other contact management software on your phone?
