If you are under contract, then you you'd have to buy full price elsewhere. However, you cannot return the current contract phone. So, in essence, you'd pay full price for the Apple and you'd keep paying via access fee for the current Verizon phone.
Just a suggestion but you should try going to a Best Buy. They can check and see if you can upgrade early. What you may be eligible for is an early upgrade that would require you to send back your current phone but give you the ability to upgrade now. I work at a Best Buy and it's worth a try.
