Converting SIM to eSIM while abroad (iPhone xr)

I am currently abroad in India and thought I would be able to find an eSIM from a local carrier where I am staying but only physical SIM’s are available and I don’t want to lose my Verizon SIM switching back and forth constantly.

Is it possible for Verizon to switch my Verizon SIM to an eSIM while I am abroad so that I can use my physical SIM slot for a local carrier? If so, what are the steps I need to take?

That's a great question. That will depend on if you've activated your eSIM before in the United States. The first time a SIM card or eSIM activates it does have to connect with a tower.*Melissa

That would have to be a Verizon tower. No U.S.-based cell phone provider is allowed to have their own towers in another country. We contract with cell providers to provide you with service while you're abroad. However, the SIM card or eSIM would have needed to be activated in the United States with a Verizon cell tower first. Does that make sense?*Melissa
