How to activate iphone?

Hi all, I am in Kenya. A friend recently gave me a phone that had been puchased in the USA. I have been trying to activate it, but it is not working. It keeps asking me for zip code info and 4 digits of ssn. How can i activate the phone if i dont have this info? Itunes is giving me xxx-xxx-xxxx as the phone number.. I have activated other iphones in the past, but this is the first time I am being asked for such info. I would really appreciate some help.

I will guess the phone has a Verizon SIM card, which is why you are here.  You need to remove it and insert a local SIM card to activate with your local service.
