I got an iPhone from a friend and cannot pay the bill

I am wondering how to get my number from off my old iPhone because I cannot pay the prepaid bill on the new iPhone. I changed devices already on my account but cannot pay the bill, it says my bill is due in October, when my old iPhone 4 bill was due on the 1st of May. Please help.
