iMessage is free over WiFi. Regular texts use the cellular network instead of the data network so you probably cannot use  basic texts for free. There are free apps like Viber that allow text over WiFi where you won't get charged a penny.

Bahns2,

I would love to be in Jamaica right now!  I also would not want you to recieve any roaming data charges because they can add up quickly and can be very costly if the correct Global Data Plan is not used. http://vz.to/17KseUf If you wish to use your Verizon Wireless Data while in Jamaica I advise to add our Global Data Plan for $25 for 100 MB.  If you wish not to use data and incur no charges, please turn "Off" Cellular data in settings. (Settings>Cellular>OFF)  If you are connected to a local Wi-Fi connection there is no need to worry, that Data connection is free as long as stay connected to Wi-Fi assuring Cellular data is off.
