My iPhone 4S has begun to randomly power down, even with sufficient battery life.

My iPhone 4S powers down and shuts off as if the battery is dead, even at 50% or more battery life. I can turn it back on but it will  power down again almost immediately. Does anyone know what causes this and what can be done about it? Thank you.
