Turn off the phone, take out the SIM card (little tray with a hole on it on the volume side - poke a straightened out paper clip in there and push, the tray will pop out). Rub the SIM card with a lint free cloth, reinsert SIM card and turn back on. If that does work, go into Settings/General/Reset and reset network settings. You will need to pair with wifi again after this step if you do that, but it causes no other data loss to the phone.
