Number Spoofing

My number is being spoofed. I have received a number of phone calls from people who say that they missed my call, but i didn't ever call them. I've also been the victim of this harassment. A local number calls me and I answer. A recorded female voice then tells me to press one to speak to cardmember services to lower my interest rates. When I do that, I'm transferred to a call center where a heavily accented voice, seemingly Indian starts asking me questions about how much I owe. Previously, I've immediately asked who they work for, and they immediately hang up, but this morning, I answered a few of the leading questions "how much do you owe, on which card do you owe the most, etc. I responded that I owe about $1000 dollars and the operator becomes very threatening and insists that I hang up, right now. I don't. I ask him who he works for and he becomes more threatening. I'm not changing my number. This is your problem Verizon. Please fix it. I don't wish to be threatened anymore.

MY number is randomly face timing a specific number.  I've no idea why or how.

Not really sure why you would assume this is Verizon's fault. If your Apple ID was compromised someone could gain access to your iCloud account, your contacts, etc. have you tried changing your Apple ID password? If your device was somehow hacked that wouldn't have been because of Verizon. Your computer (if you have ever connected your iPhone to it or accessed your Apple info) could have been hacked and I suppose that could be how they gained info. If there is anyone in your life that could have ever had access to your info (family member, friend, etc)...not saying any of this is the case but you never know. I just can't understand why you assume it's something connected to Verizon automatically. I would definitely recommend changing your passwords. Block the numbers calling you if you can on your device. Changing your passwords should help if anyone is accessing your account remotely although you would normally receive an email from Apple when your account is accessed anywhere other than on your iPhone.

Kaebfly,

Receiving unwanted call from unknown numbers would also bother me too. I understand how important it must be for you to be able to keep your mobile number,  I am also attached to mines too.  We allow our customers to block up to 10 mobile numbers to their account with out any charges, but you are also able to block up to 20 with our Family Base plan.  vz.to/1MQt2LB You also have the change to change your mobile without any charge if the harassment continues. vz.to/1KTMzJE   Keep us posted on how we can help.

I guess I'm not really sure why I wouldn't assume this is Verizon's issue. With equal likelihood, I'm also not really sure why you would assume my Apple information has been compromised. So... what next? Assume it isn't Verizon's issue? Assume it isn't Apple's issue? Assume it must be my issue? Nah. Someone should own the issue, and I'm not sure why it should be me above and beyond bringing it to the attention of Verizon, Apple and a wider public audience, and doing what I can on my end to secure my device using all the technological solutions provided to me by Apple and Verizon.

How does one go about emulating an iphone connected to a Verizon network to make harassing phone calls? I'm sure such nefarious technology exists to do just that, but why should I bear the burden of defensive network security, especially since I've done all I know to secure my endpoint of that network?

Have you tried Verizon Total Protection? I have it, it comes for free with Asurion insurance for $11 per month.

You troubleshoot to try and find out what the issue may be. You don't just decide to play the blame game and insist that it can't be anything but their fault without actually troubleshooting. Have you verified that calls show on your Verizon Wireless bills coming from you? Have you verified that your own call log doesn't show your device making calls? Do you connect your iPhone to your computer ever? For syncing with iTunes? Anything? Have you ensured that your computer hasn't been compromised in any way? What about trying the suggestion of changing your Apple password...just in case that is the problem? Worst case scenario is that it isn't but if it is and you insist on thinking that troubleshooting isn't your responsibility because you have decided that it couldn't be anything but Verizon's fault (well now you seem to have decided it's either theirs or Apple's) so trying to actively figure out what could be happening to you isn't something that you are willing to do. Try calling Verizon and see if you can get any help that you would be willing to try. I'm not really sure what iPhone model you have but if it's under warranty still you can also contact Apple for support if you think it's a hardware or software (Apple software) issue. If there is an app or something that would allow an unknown hacker use your device from a remote location I'm sure you could do an Internet search to confirm your suspensions and most likely find what others did to try and eliminate the problem. Not really sure what else could be suggested but perhaps someone else will chime in. Either way I hope you're able to figure something out or get some sort of resolution

The last sentence read: "I'm not sure why it should be me above and beyond bringing it to the attention of Verizon, Apple and a wider public audience, and doing what I can on my end to secure my device using all the technological solutions provided to me by Apple and Verizon" (this includes changing passwords). This would inherently imply that I am being proactive about troubleshooting, and not something that I am unwilling to do. I'm obviously willing to address true, but unhelpful commentary here.

Should I also check whether or not the calls were placed when Saturn is in retrograde?

What tools would you suggest to determine whether or not you have been compromised?

You can check the things suggested. You can contact Verizon if you think they are the problem. If you are still covered under the manufacturers warranty you can contact Apple. You can log into your Apple account on a computer and verify nothing has been changed. You can do any of things already suggested if you have not already. But declaring that there is specific blame to be placed when you aren't even sure what's going on won't get you anywhere. Sarcastic comments to any attempt at suggesting anything that may or may not help...even if it requires a little work on your end won't get you to a resolution. As it stands you don't know what is making this happen. No one so far has come along and declared that they know what's happening. Suggestions are being offered because this is a peer to peer forum. That's what most of us try to do...bounce suggestions off of each other to try and assist. If none of the suggestions are something you will look into without being defensive (or whatever you may view it as) then there isn't much anyone on here will be able to do to at least attempt to figure it out.
